US Open 2020 – Review & Highlights

The second Grand Slam of the year is usually the French Open but with Covid-19 affecting the world, this year, the second Grand Slam was US Open that ended on Sunday with Dominic Thiem emerged as the winner for the first time in his career having lost previous Grand Slam finals of the three occasions; French Open (2018, 2019) and Australian Open (2020). In the process, Thiem also became the first Austrian player to win a Grand Slam singles title since Thomas Muster in 1995.

After the victory, Thiem said, “I achieved a life goal, a dream myself, which I had for many, many years. Of course, as a kid as well when I started to play tennis. But back then it was so far away.”

“At one point I realized that, ‘Wow, maybe one day I can really win one of the four biggest titles in tennis.’ I put a lot of work in. I dedicated basically my whole life until this point to win one of the four majors. Now I did it.”

US Open Men’s Tennis Singles Results 

After the dramatic exit of favorite and world number one, Novak Djokovic, the field was all set for a new champion. Four young players; Denis Shapovalov, Borna Coric, Andrey Rublev, and Alex de Minaur reached the quarterfinals stage of a Grand Slam for the first time. But all the first-timers lost their respective matches against their respective counterparts.

In the semifinals, Alexander Zverev proved too hot for Pablo Carreno Busta, who was on the lucky end in the drastic Djokovic’s end in the 4th round, despite losing the opening two sets. Zverev came back strong to win the next three sets and entered his first Grand Slam final, his best result so far. The second semifinal saw three-time Grand Slam finalist, Dominic Thiem vs last year’s US Open finalist, Daniil Medvedev. Thiem won the match in straight sets.

Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev, who already met at the semifinals of the Australian Open earlier in the year, were all set for the final showdown of the showpiece event. Zverev had the best of the starts leading the match by two sets but a fighting Thiem didn’t lost motivation. Gathering himself, he won the next two sets. In the final set, both the players had the opportunities to close out the match as both served for the championship but both failed. For the first time, a 5th set tie break is needed to decide the US Open winner and it was Thiem who won the 5th set tie break 8-6. In the process, Thiem also became the first player to win a Grand Slam from two sets down since 1949.

The US Open 2020 is Dominic Thiem’s 1st Grand Slam title.

Final: Dominic Thiem beat Alexander Zverev (2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6))

US Open Women’s Tennis Singles Results

The semifinals had three women former Grand Slam winners. Naomi Osaka beat Jennifer Brady after a tough match, winning in three sets. Victoria Azarenka beat the 23-time Majors winner, Serena Williams despite losing the opening set 6-1. Two-time Australian Open champion gathered herself to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-3.

Azarenka was looking to become only the 4th mother to win the Grand Slam title and winning the first set 6-1 further strengthen her chances but the 2018 US Open winner came back to win the match in the next two sets thus becoming the first player since 1994 to win the US Open from coming back from 1-set down to win the title.

The US Open 2020 is Naomi Osaka’s 3rd Grand Slam title.

Final: Naomi Osaka beat Victoria Azarenka (1-6, 6-3, 6-3)
