Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal Team Up with Bill Gates and Trevor Noah to Raise Millions for Tennis Charity

The “Match for Africa” series is the category of exhibitory tennis matches played in order to raise funds for the Roger Federation Foundation. The foundation has the motto to help the less privileged children in Africa and promote their access to education and sport.

The Roger Federer Foundation:

Roger Federer Foundation has been working charitable programs in Africa and Switzerland for the last sixteen years. The purpose of the foundation is to give children a good start in education. Till now, over 1.5 million children have been benefitted by the foundation.

History: The first match for this great cause was played in 2010, in Switzerland against Rafael Nadal. Since then, four more matches were played. Each time, the matches have raised over $1 million US dollars.

Match in Africa 6:

At the Wimbledon 2019, Roger Federer announced that he will be playing with Rafael Nadal at the 6th edition for his foundation in South Africa. The match took place on 7th February at the Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town, South Africa.

Audience: The match was watched by record 51,954 people, which is the match watched by most spectators

Prize Money raised: The show piece event raised more than $3.5 million (approximately R54 million)

Singles: 20-times Grand Slam winner vs 19-time Grand Slam winner. Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal. You can’t get much more excited as the two are facing each other in an exhibition match. The football stadium turned into a tennis court with over fifty-thousand spectators watching their favorites. The match was a fun exhibition. Both the players laughed, cracked jokes but also showing of their skills of what they are capable off. With Nadal smashing unorthodox overheads to Federer’s last touch of excellence, one-and-a-half hour battle was something very special to watch.

Roger Federer beat Rafael Nadal (6-4, 3-6, 6-3)

Doubles: In the doubles match, Federer was joined by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gate, while Nadal was joined by South African comedian Trevor Noah. This was the 3rd time that Bill Gates had partnered Roger Federer for his ‘Match for Africa’ series. After plenty of drama which also included impersonation of Nadal by is partner, the match was won by Federer and Gates.

After the match Federer said: “What an unforgettable night. We raised more than two-and-a-half million US dollars for vulnerable children in the region, achieved a world record for the largest attendance at a tennis match and had so much fun on the court. Thanks, Rafa for a great match, to Bill and Trevor for stepping out of their comfort zones, and most of all, thank you, South Africa, and thank you Cape Town, for all your overwhelming support and for making a difference to those who need it most”.
