What Did Federer say back?
“As the father of four young children and a fervent supporter of universal education, I have a great deal of respect and admiration for the youth climate movement, and I am grateful to young climate activists for pushing us all to examine our behaviours and act on innovative solutions. We owe it to them and ourselves to listen. I appreciate reminders of my responsibility as a private individual, as an athlete and as an entrepreneur, and I’m committed to using this privileged position to dialogue on important issues with my sponsors.”
What became of it?
- Federer admitted he needs to has important discussion with his sponsors so that they can align with his personal goals. However the statement was carefully worded not really saying anything about the situation.
- Credit Suisse recently stated it is “seeking to align its loan portfolios with the objectives of the Paris Agreement and has recently announced in the context of its global climate strategy that it will no longer invest in new coal-fired power plants”.
- A group of climate activists faced court last week after refusing to pay fines related to a publicity stunt at multiple Credit Suisse branches in Switzerland last year. The protesters, some dressed in tennis whites, hit tennis balls back and forth inside multiple Credit Suisse branches in Switzerland last year. More protests were held during the court proceedings last week, with one banner saying: "Credit Suisse is destroying the planet. Roger, do you support them?"
- Credit Suisse said it will halt financing the development of new coal-fired power plants which is a start, but the activist are still looking for more from the bank and the Tennis Star Roger Federer.
Cmon Roger! Step up and stop supporting Credit Suisse and use that Celebrity and Money to take on Climate Change!
